Hi, my name is Morgan. My pronouns are she/her and I am a senior history major; this is my final semester at Mary Washington. I primarily study Russian and Soviet history, as well as state-run biological weapons programs in the mid to late 20th century. I primarily took this class because I needed a 400 level course to graduate and like morning classes, but I’m really looking forward to getting to explore this subject matter more. I’ve encountered the topic of what mental health and mental health care have look liked historically primarily through literature — I was a big horror fan when I was younger and the abandoned haunted asylum was, in my experience, one of the most common recurring tropes in mediocre young adult horror, and it’s come up quite a bit in 19th century British and Russian literature that I’ve read as well although tonally it’s quite different — so I’m curious to see what the real life basis for these literary topes are, as well as how they might have evolved from changes in popular perception of mental health.

Introduction
My name is Ruth Curran and I am a History major. I chose this course because the topic sounded really interesting and it also worked well with my schedule. I also really enjoyed and felt I acquired a lot of practical knowledge from the last seminar I took with Professor McClurken.
I am a single mother of 2 boys and I also work full time! I am a server and I also am a certified Yoga Instructor. My true passion for work lies in helping people discover wellness from a different perspective, a whole lifestyle approach. We are a very active family, this summer we took many trips to the river, hiking, and kayaking. My sons did 7 miles with me several times on the Appalachian trail this summer which I think is great! I also love horseback riding and having been riding for over 20 years now.
I am looking forward to digging into the materials for the course and learning many different perspectives and insights from the class.

I am a senior history major. I am the third person in my family to attend UMW. I have played for the school’s Rugby team since the Fall of 2019 as a walk-on.
