Misinformation Memes

March 23, 2023

For the fourth student-created assignment this semester, students chose a topic of historical misinformation, something about which there is evidence against a narrative or belief that is commonly held.  They then created a meme about it and created a blog post on their site explaining the meme, the sources they used to research it, and some reflections on their process. After “semi-formal” class presentations, we had a great discussion of why some misinformation persists, how easy it is to take sides that perpetuate misinformation, and what that means for understandings of authority, accuracy, and today’s society.

I want to be clear (and the students want me to be clear) that in a number of these cases, the memes created are NOT the views of the creators, but explorations of misinformation-based viewpoints.
