Audrey Schroeder --

1. Do people see mental health as only a field because that is all they know about it or is it because they do not want to humanize a difficult topic (Bertolote)?

2. Society blames medicine, the devil, etc. for impacting mental health, but in reality the real culprits are societal expectations.

Week 2 - Questions for Tuesday August 31,2021

1.	The Grob text mentions how the treatment of insanity was interlinked with religion as an “operative element” (pg. 31). He later states (pg. 58) how mid-nineteenth-century psychiatrists managed to infuse both moral values and science into their model of insanity. Grob stresses (pg. 60): the two general causes for insanity were classified as “physical” and “moral”. I believe this school of thought had a tremendous negative impact on how mental pati…

1.	Foucault states: The absence of constraint in the nineteenth-century asylum is not unreason liberated, but madness long since mastered (252). Is Foucault praising Tuke’s Quaker ideals that used religious principles as humane treatment for the insane. What is your opinion of these methods that integrated moral principles (shame with transgressions as sins and the idea that each man was morally responsible to NOT disturb society) rather than physical restraints?…

Questions for Tues. September 7, 2021

1.	Tomes tells us that Lasch and Katz felt that asylums were instruments of social control that fostered a “single standard of citizenship” which worked well in a rapidly industrializing society. She also explains how they felt asylum treatments were nothing more than “scientific rationalizations of middle-class morality.” (10) It seems that Foucault, Lasch, and Katz all believed asylums were not necessarily good innovations. What do you think? Where asylum…

Questions for Thursday Sept. 9, 2021

1.	Kirkbride was a big advocate of “routine” (Tomes –pgs. 199-200) with scheduled activities that included physical and mental exercise. He also implemented asylum patients’ daily activities “according to their affluence.” (201) This approach reminds me of how the military trains and sustains internal obedience and self-discipline while carefully maintaining the rank structure of officers and enlisted. 2.	Dr. McClurken’s chapter 5 reading mentions the “social stigma” attached to mental illness in Civil War veterans (139).
1. In Women of the Asylum, Geller and Harris mention the idea of the True Woman as the prevailing mindset of both men and women of this time period. This idea presents the image of the passive and submissive wife that is dependent upon her husband for survival, from an economic standpoint and for power within the house and/or marriage. These women were meant to be mothers, yet it was this factor that led to so many women being psychologically imprisoned. Should a woman speak up, should she make …

1.	Grob tells us Dr. Rashi Fein (1926-2014), the author of a study dealing with the economics of mental illness, wrote this: “What society can spend (and ultimately what society should spend) depends on the value system that society holds to.” (247) Dr. Fein has been called “the architect of Medicare.” How is America doing in 2021?
1.The last reading by Frances Farmer (314-325) is a scathing critique of Western State Hospital in Washington state. Farmer was brutalized the entire time she was a patient.
1.	Grob tells us: “Whatever its contradictory and tangled origins, deinstitutionalization had positive consequences for a large part of the nation’s severely and persistently mentally ill population.” (292) Is America still doing a good job with deinstitutionalization? Why are there an estimated 78,000 people living on the streets of NYC? (Statista.com – April 2021) This article addresses the relationship between homelessness and mental illness:

1.	Metzel tells us that: “Scholars have long argued that medical and governmental institutions code threats to authority as mental illness during moments of political turmoil.” (14) The mental health of both our 45th and 46th (current) US President has been called into question by their opponents. The intense media coverage on both sides exacerbates the situation and this undermines the confidence of the American people. I find our current lack of decorum in politics very unsettling. Mental illn…

1.	Metzel tells us that: “Anti-psychiatry went hand in hand with an international movement called deinstitutionalization that pushed for the liberation of people warehoused in psychiatric hospitals.” He states that JFK’s October 1963 Community Mental Health Act caused a “mass exodus” of persons leaving institutions. (134) Was the deinstitutionalization movement a success? Why or why not?

1.	Tones text states “Thorazine inaugurated the massive deinstitutionalization of psychiatric patients, chiefly schizophrenics.” (80) She also tells us how Thorazine provided scientists with a “promising research agenda” as they realized that schizophrenia was caused by chemical deficiencies. (80) Is it ethical to place psychiatric patients in a “zombie like state” to control a serious mental illness? Do we do it for the “greater good?” The issue of drugging people into calmness and submission i…

1.	The film that I chose, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, really spoke to me about the issue of social deviance being categorized as mental illness. We all know someone who is “just a bit different” and can be disruptive or inflammatory. The question then becomes: “What constitutes mental illness?” Why are today’s jails so filled with people who need mental health assistance? Is criminal behavior a by-product of mental disease? Conversely, is mental disease the result of incarceration stress?…

1-The art that we viewed was unique in different ways. My favorite image was the chess set by Javier Tellez. I also liked the “Mad Love Asylum” image with the upside down white umbrellas. The drawings by Bobby Baker were most disturbing and made me so sad. What images evoked strong feelings for you?

1.	Earley’s book outlines the fate of Mr. Boreman, a severely mentally ill person who the police tried to help by arresting for trespassing. While incarcerated Boreman punched a police officer. Dr. Poitier is quoted as saying, “The police officer who arrested him thought he was doing him a favor, now he’s facing a very serious felony charge. He’s a perfect example of why the mentally ill should not be put in jail. He needs help for his mental illness, and he won’t get it here.” (50) Thoughts on …

1.	Mike Earley is told by mental health professionals that his bipolar illness was no reason to be embarrassed. (216) Unfortunately, each time he tried to get a job as soon as the word “bipolar” was said, the interviews were over. (217) The bias against him was very clear. The one job he did get let him go after his misdemeanors were brought to light.

1. Before reading the article on prolonged exposure and the treatment of PTSD with virtual reality, I never would have considered that to be a possibility. I am familiar with VR (and have even been interested in purchasing a VR setup) but had held back due to its limitations and costs. I can definitely see the benefits of using VR to treat PTSD through prolonged exposure, as well as other phobias. However I can think of some issues as well. Some people cannot handle VR. While the tech…
