1 Reel History, Introduction

I want to complain about the waterfalls in Pocahontas. There aren't any near Jamestown. --- jmcclurken 2016/08/30 10:15

Please correct me if I am wrong, but let’s be honest, when we find out that our favorite novel is being made into a movie part of us gets excited because we get to see a novel come to life. Then again, part of us also dies because we just know that Hollywood is going to mess up the novel. However, I never thought it in terms of historical events…

In the movie, they made Pocahontas much older than she really was at the time of meeting John Smith in 1607. Which in a way, could be considered a 'good' thing for the movie based off of her love interest with John, which was also never a thing

I.	How does this movie work as a secondary source? What does the movie get right about history?

I do not believe the 1995 Disney film of Pocahontas would make a good secondary source. Especially after reading John Smith’s ‘True Relation of Such Occurrences’. I think it is extremely problematic and only has very shallow accuracies in its portrayal of relations betwee…

The film, while generally attempting to portray Natives as accurately as possible, still botches some details by Westernizing their characters and their society. For example, the women are shown harvesting crops and the men are seen hunting and fishing. Based on current knowledge, this is accurate. However, the crops were shown as being planted in very neat rows where they were mixed together with various other crops as well.

The biggest error in fact would have to be the fact that Colonel Munro had daughters. Not only did he have daughters, but he had a daughter that was in love with another fiction character. However, this movie is based off a book in which these characters exists so in novel standards they got this right. In history standards, it is just plain wrong. That ambush is also pretty impressive with a musket reload time of like 20 seconds.

One minor thing about Robert Gould Shaw's depiction is that historically he initially rejected the offer to command the 54th Massachusetts the first time, and a few days later changed his mind. While in the movie he accepts the offer the day he was given it.
1 Errors in fact

An error in the film is when people are depicted as believing that the war caused many soldiers to be left out of work and believe that their job would not be waiting for them. In reality, due to many bills enacted during the war, returning vets were guaranteed their jobs after returning (unless the company got bought out, etc.)

The ending of the movie in the carpool lot never happened. However, the hate times committed by the White Citizens Council were plenty. The movie mentions the bombing of Martin Luther King's home which as likely the fault of the WCK or a group of segregationists. -Lake Wiley

While the film stays true to history and its source material, it does get one thing wrong about the Vietnam War. My dad pointed out that the U.S. Marines did not use the Bell UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) helicopter. That was strictly a U.S. Army helicopter. The Marines used Hueys at the beginning of the war, but they were phased out for the Boeing Vertol CH-46 Sea Knight and the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King.
