It's often thought that a movie about history has to choose between being fun and providing valuable historical insight into a period. This is thought to be because Hollywood misrepresents the truth of history to make a movie compelling. However, even films that do not provide accurate historical insight into the period they are representing can still provide valuable insight into the period the film was made in. –Ezra C.
This is an actual conversation shared by Puerto Rican actress Rita Moreno in a 2021 interview for the West Side Story remake. The exchange occurred between her and one of the film's makeup artists on set of West Side Story// (1961). His response came after Moreno and the other actors protested against the use of one universal shade of makeup for the Puerto Rican characters. Since then, Moreno has become outspoken about the importance of authentic portrayals of diversity on screen. To me, this calls back to the idea that movies teach and alter are conscience more than we may realize. – Izabella M.
