Technology has gone through many phases through the centuries from the railroad all the way down to what women did in the household. That caught my attention the most is that the technology that was discussed in //American Technology// by Carroll Pursell in the first 10 pages, did not all have something to do with electricity or technological advancements that have happened over the years. Just the fact that women in the household being mentioned because of the complicated technological systems that were involved in the household. One of those being cooking that did not only have the designing of the meals that were being made but the specialized energy that was being used by the stoves in the household that women used (p.3). - Hunter Dykhuis Technology has gone through many phases through the centuries from the railroad all the way down to what women did in the household. -When someone says technology one might think of electronics and things of that nature. It might be a surprise but technology is much broader than just electronics. Technology is anything that was or is invented to aid the person. We see in Carroll Pursell's, American Technology, that technology has been helping people basically since the dawn of time. From stone tools to the computers and electric cars we use today can all be considered technology. The type of technology we use is ever-changing throughout history. As we build our history we build more and more advanced technology with it. - Erin Madden+Within the introduction of Pursell’s American Technology the focus of technology isn’t just singular items that people have made, or advanced, for their use, but rather the history and social aspects of these technologies. Pursell writes in a fashion that makes me believe that technology isn’t just artifacts, but also moments. In class we discussed how certain technologies we’re slow to catch on, or made obsolete, and my take away from Pursell’s introduction is that is shown repeatedly throughout history. - Elizabeth Davis

+I thought that Pursell defined technology as the creation of products/tools that were the result of both choices and accidents. He said “It does not grow out of its own logic nor is it always and inevitably progressive (pg. 2).  The world is forever changing, and as long as it keeps changing there will always be a need for new technology. That being said Pursell stated that “new technologies are used for some purposes, but join rather replace the older ones” (pg. 2).
+My own definition of technology would be something that is created to help fix a problem.  For example, cars were created to travel places more quickly.  Wheels were made to make transporting things more efficient.  I also think it’s important to talk about the social side of technology as well as the technical side.  Pursell talks about the social context of technology, but what is that exactly?  In American Technology, he says “the social context of technologies shows, workers thrown off the job, economy soaring, families strengthened or weakened, countryside denuded, and Native Americans driven off the land” (pg. 3).  He gives examples such as the creation of the axe causing deforestation and machine taking over a person’s job leaving them jobless.  If there is a need to fix a problem, technology is always going to shift to find a way to solve the issue, whether it’s pairing or modifying, old technology or it is completely new and original. - Claire Starke

Throughout the years, technology has advanced tremendously from the cotton gin to the iPhone. Purcell has thought about technology in a way different way than what people would think of. In the world today, people think of technology as anything that runs on electric power like a laptop or a television. Purcell makes technology out to be something that has adapted overtime to help people with everyday jobs and to make their lives easier. As she says, “society determines technology” is correct (pg. 1). Technology has to advance with people. As eras and time goes on, technology has to move along with it. Typewriters would not work in today’s time because everything else is advanced, and people are moving faster than they were. -Reilly Miller Throughout the years, technology has advanced tremendously from the cotton gin to the iPhone.  In the Pursell reading technology was defined in multiple ways whether it was an ax, a telephone, or a process. This was really interesting to read because it gave me a better perspective on what technology really is. In my mind before reading this I imagined technology as something that had to specifically do with electronics. This leads into the idea that depending where you are from the definition of technology will change. For me the idea of technology is one thing but in the past technology for instance a caveman was literally fire. This is really interesting to think about and realize how much technology has changed over time and how the definition of it changes right along with it. -Tory Martin In the Pursell reading technology was defined in multiple ways whether it was an ax, a telephone, or a process.  +"Technology is a result of both good and bad depending on where one stands in the situation" I liked this definition because there are so many different points of view and you can see it from so many different ways. The text points out several cultural differences and one specifically being Britain. They called it the workshop of the world. But yet at the same time even though it is considered good, in specific situations it caused suffering.Typically when we think of technology now, we think of digital and computers, but I am now realizing that that is not all technology. We are literally surrounded at all moments with some type of technology. Different places around the world might have different definitions of technology and have different viewpoints about the same pieces. -Haley Denehy

==== What is culture? ==== ==== What is culture? ====
+Culture is what defines a group of people, shared ideological and values that make a group of people who they are. Morals and decision making are influenced by culture. Culture is subject to change as it is typically not a permanent thing. -John Liberty

“Technological Determinism” was a well-written infographic on how technological determinism and how it changes the views on the older forms of technology and the knowledge behind them. For example, the infographic used how new and advanced tools are making people forget the traditional methods of farming. Even though this infographic gives examples, the samples should be more updated to help the reader relate to it. If the article mentioned video game consoles and how they advanced with time, readers would relate and connect with the infographic. Also, the authors are not very credible because their academic backgrounds are not the strongest. This brings down the credibility of the infographic. -Reilly Miller “Technological Determinism” was a well-written infographic on how technological determinism and how it changes the views on the older forms of technology and the knowledge behind them.  +I appreciated the way that this infographic is set up simply because it is so easy to follow. It had a simple timeline that showed just how the technology changed and the dates. Now with that all being said, it is very elementary level and probably not the best source to use for a research project. It also only gives such small idea of just how impactful each piece is. There may also have been more items created at the same date and it does not show us them all. -Haley Denehy
