2. It is interesting that Szasz argues that the concept of “illness” implies “deviation from some clearly defined norm.” I find this interesting because just last class we were discussing how women were vulnerable to being diagnosed with mental illnesses and put into institutions because they deviated from the established norm of the patriarchy. Szasz thus argues that mental illness is just a social construct of what is and isn’t considered the “norm,” which echoes earlier discussions we’ve had in class. When I first read this source I was taken aback due to Szasz’s argument, but then was reminded that we discussed this in class before, and it caused me to shift my thinking on the question “what is mental illness?” -Teresa | 2. Explaining that labeling behaviors that are simply outside the norm is harmful makes me think of how normalized it is for people to diagnos themselves with mental disorders due to the preconcieved notion of that disorder. When in reality, doing one slightly non-uniform action does not automatically warrant a mental disorder. - NG | ||
