  • Mission statement
    • We wish to highlight both the personal and military experience of a World War II Veteran through his personal family scrapbook. We want to explore his life by emphasizing the images and captions he provided. We want the website to be inviting but not distracting in terms of color and theme, especially with larger black and white images.

  • Include audience and advertising and project/data sustainability models
    • Networking through other online sites (social media and/or scholarly digital repository. We want to upload the entirety of the scrapbook in such a way that it will remain accessible online for as long as possible. The audience of this website is centered around World War II research as well as a more personal viewpoint of the war from a soldier’s perspective. The audience might also find this website useful if they are looking through the oral history project that this scrapbook is connected with. We will include a brief overview of WWII in general, including the difference between the European theater vs the Pacific theater, and give a brief explanation of scrapbooks and their usage during this time.

  • Tools planning on using
    • Omeka
      • We will use Omeka as the base of the website
      • Word Cloud at the bottom of the opening page from metadata tagging to make it easier from users to find specific images and topics
      • Omeka is divided up into the following categories and used in the following ways:
        • Items: Scrapbook pages just the images
        • Collections: There will be a browse collections tab where viewers can browse just the scrapbook page images without transcriptions and then with transcriptions. The scrapbook has some sections built into it with blank pages so collections will be separated based on the scrapbook sections
        • Exhibits: StorymapJS with images, Highlighting certain people included in the scrapbook, how they interacted with Schwarz, and how they were featured in the scrapbook. His wife will receive her own page that is linked to the oral history interview.
    • StorymapJS
      • We will create a StorymapJS displaying his travels during his enlistment, service, and return home.
