Summers Published his work in 2019, but the history Summers gives of Saint Elizabeths ends in the 1980s. I wanted to follow up on Summers&#8217;s work and find out how Saint Elizabeths was doing today and if the institution had any improvements. According to a Washington Post article, this is not the case. Deinstitutionalization was a failure especially in the case of Saint Elizabeths. Summers argues in his book, Saint Elizeabthes was an institution that once was the model for mental health care in America but became emblematic of the neglect of the federal government. Summers&#8217;s argument still rings true today. In the Washington Post article, the conditions of the institution are in horrible shape and patients are still being neglected. Seventeen people who were forceable committed to Saint Elizabeth&#8217;s died from complications due to Covid-19. Also, a staff member lost their life because they were exposed to coronavirus. The Article, at the time, that it was written, over half of the hospital&#8217;s population was affected by the virus. The reason for the high contractions of the virus is due to the institution&#8217;s lack of preventative measures in place to help decrease the spread of the virus and the delayed action in the prevention of the spread of coronavirus.
