{"id":110,"date":"2021-08-31T23:11:20","date_gmt":"2021-08-31T23:11:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/historyofmentalhealth.janisshurtleff.com\/blog\/?p=25"},"modified":"2021-08-31T23:11:20","modified_gmt":"2021-08-31T23:11:20","slug":"virginia-asylums-racist-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/courses.mcclurken.org\/HistoryOfMentalHealth\/histmental2021\/virginia-asylums-racist-records\/","title":{"rendered":"Virginia Asylum\u2019s Racist Records"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/magazine\/black-asylum-files-reveal-racism\/2021\/03\/26\/ebfb2eda-6d78-11eb-9ead-673168d5b874_story.html\">https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/magazine\/black-asylum-files-reveal-racism\/2021\/03\/26\/ebfb2eda-6d78-11eb-9ead-673168d5b874_story.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-light-gray-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#103711\">This is a short and informative article that highlights the importance of studying the history of mental institutions as a way of informing the public to deeply engrained racist practices that continue to effect society today.\u00a0 Professor King Davis has been working since 2007 to preserve the archives of the Central Lunatic Asylum located twenty-five miles south of Richmond, Virginia.\u00a0 Central Lunatic Asylum was established in 1868 as the first exclusively African American institution.\u00a0 The records being examined are in a fragile state and offer little in context of the patient\u2019s individual experiences, however, they do shine light on the horrible conditions and ideologies they endured.\u00a0 African American men were especially vulnerable to inhumane \u201ctreatments\u201d due to the racist notion that these men were dangerous and aggressive if not under white control i.e., enslaved.
